Story

BEAM started with a mundane realization: Construction sites are common in our daily lives, but people often pass by them without realizing the actual risks. Many accidents happen because pedestrians don’t have real-time information or guidance in these areas. This inspired us to create a solution that keeps pedestrians safe in these environments.

BEAM symbolizes guidance and safety, like a beam of light cutting through uncertainty. The visual identity comes from the fixed-ended beams, also used as our icons, which are firm structures used in construction for support. Like the beams that ensure support for construction, we want to provide the users a seamless journey through construction sites, free from unexpected hazards

BEAM was designed for everyone—regardless of age, background, or familiarity with technology—offering reassurance and confidence in environments where dangers are often unseen.

At its core, BEAM is an information kiosk for construction site passersby, equipped with real-time alerts and interactive voice assistance to provide critical, time-sensitive guidance. Whether it’s warning of falling debris, suggesting safer detours, or delivering step-by-step emergency instructions, BEAM ensures no one is left vulnerable in these ever-changing landscapes.

But BEAM is more than just functional. Its rational benefits lie in reducing risks and safeguarding pedestrians, while its emotional benefits foster a sense of safety and relief, assuring the public that their well-being is our priority.

Inspired by values of reliability, accessibility, and support, BEAM embodies immediate alertness—delivering the right information at the right time. It’s designed with three guiding principles: Accessibility, Clarity, and Time-Sensitive Responses, ensuring straightforward, user-friendly interactions in moments when every second counts.

BEAM doesn’t just inform; it protects, empowers, and reassures. By addressing a critical yet often overlooked need, BEAM transforms construction zones from sources of anxiety into spaces where public safety is prioritized.

What We Did

UX Research
We conducted surveys and interviews to understand the people’s general perceptions of construction sites, the information they have, their behaviors when passing by construction sites, and their pain points. The subject-matter interview was conducted with an industry professional and professor teaching in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering. Through this process, we gained data and insights into construction management and safety regulations. Also, we were suggested to let everyone, from a child to an adult of different languages have access to it. Within the research and survey, we were able to narrow down the target audience, gain specific insights about the discomforts of users, and get access to resources to refer to in future processes.
Design
Since our main concept is about safety, we decided to choose a color palette related to the theme. We used monotone and simple, clear gray and white colors for readability and efficiency, based on the colors of the common construction sites. For the accent colors, we utilized awareness and warning-related colors such as scarlet red and bright yellow to emphasize key features and information.
Branding
As an interactive and informative kiosk, we thought our project should be simple and clear regarding its form and function. Therefore, our core functionality focuses on conveying real-time urgent alerts and related information to pedestrians and passersby. Our design approaches are also based on accessibility, straightforward delivery, and interactive, real-time systems.
Prototyping
Through prototyping and further development of the BEAM, we found the approachable height and size of the physical kiosk, as well as the right amount of contrast to make it easily visible in busy construction sites. Also, since the overall function of the BEAM was designed to be fully interactive by reflecting the actual circumstances in real-time, we decided to provide simple questions and several options concretely for an immediate diagnosis of the situation that the user faced.
Presentation
For the presentation on BEAM, we aimed to keep it straightforward and impactful. We connected the concept of construction sites and an environment we all frequently encounter to the user’s experience, making it easy for the audience to grasp and relate. Additionally, we integrated findings from user research to emphasize the most relevant and relatable aspects for the audience.
