“Step in, Breathe out,”
MŪTUS — from the Latin word for silence — is a personalized, immersive booth designed for hospitals, offering a calm space to pause, reset, and return. It invites users into a sensory experience where silence is not absence, but presence.
Through simple gestures or quiet voice prompts, users activate a 360° environment built from motion projections, 3D soundscapes, and optional aromatherapy. The system adapts in real time to preferences in mood, sound, and duration, shifting with each breath or phrase. A fully enclosed, soundproof booth offers adjustable light, temperature, and ambiance, supporting deep emotional and physical rest.
MŪTUS serves patients, medical staff, and companions alike—each entering in their own rhythm, and leaving with stillness carried forward. Blending speculative design with human-centered care, it reimagines rest as an active, personalized act of healing—quietly supporting the emotional health of those who carry, and those who are carried, within the hospital.

Story

“I need moments to myself to clear my mind, especially during night shifts when eyes are strained by monitors and paperwork.” — Nurse, ER department

This quote summarizes the sentiment of the hospital staff who shared the emotional weight of night shifts, long wait times, and the constant noise of medical equipment. A sensation that led us to question How might we help medical staff escape for a moment?

MŪTUS, the Latin word for silence, embodies calm, clarity, and emotional care, and is our answer and vision for a space where restoration and self-reflection. It provides a design system of user-centric approaches such as distant hand gestures, voice commands, and personalized prompting features for comfortable and interactive use. Through motion projections and an adjustable environment from start to end, this immersive experience allows the users to carry their calm back to their reality.

What We Did

UX Research
While developing our concept, we conducted in-depth interviews with patients, companions, and hospital staff to understand the challenges within the hospital environment, focusing on emotional distress, long waiting times, and excessive noise. These insights highlighted the lack of emotional relief spaces, which inspired us to design a booth offering a distraction-free, customizable environment. The booth allows users to adjust lighting, sound, and temperature, providing a flexible, portable solution for comfort. We also supported our concept with scientific research to validate the practicality and impact of our design. This research helped refine our idea to effectively address the identified challenges and enhance the user experience.
Design
To visually express our core concept, we developed a serene and calm color palette that reflects our idea of relaxation and soothing. Then, we applied the colors into a gradient system to minimize harsh contrast and emphasize smooth and gentle transitions. Since our product showcases relaxation and hospitality through our screen, we incorporated the part of our logo as an actual component of our booth and UI design. Also, for the physical booth, we conducted research about the material, structure, and shape of the three-dimensional model to ensure the comfort, durability, and spatial harmony of our booth.
Branding
MŪTUS, from the Latin word for silence, embodies calm, clarity, and emotional care. Positioned at the intersection of healthcare, technology, and design, the brand reflects a future where rest is personalized, sensory, and intuitive. The tagline “Step in, Breathe out” grounds the experience in simplicity and calm, capturing the core essence of serenity and intentional pause.
Video Storytelling
We structured the video to visualize our concept of taking the users anywhere they want, as a short moment of relaxation inside the booth. To communicate this idea, we created a series of immersive visuals featuring diverse, calming environments and seamlessly integrated them with our booth model. In doing so, we were able to deliver our message clearly and impactfully, staying true to our brand identity: minimal, poetic, and resonant.
Presentation
The presentation was crafted using a minimal, refined aesthetic to effectively showcase the functionality and emotional intent of our booth. From early concept development and user research to brand strategy, video production, and user interface design, each element was thoughtfully curated to reflect tranquility and cohesion. Subtle glowing accents and soft transitions were incorporated to evoke a sense of restoration and immersive serenity. Ultimately, MŪTUS is not just a product, but a designed pause in the tense hospital rhythm. We hope it brings moments of stillness and helps you carry your calm forward.

Optimal Projection Placement: The immersive video is projected at the user’s eyelineand ideal distance, ensuring a fully comfortable and seamless visual experience.

By tapping their phone on the screen outside the booth, users could instantly access the booking pop-up and receive notifications about their upcoming reservations.

A waiting list pop-up appears regularly, and once the booth is ready, users receive a notification inviting them to enter.

Inside the booth, users could view a screen that displays the MŪTUS experiences divided into three sections: landscapes, therapy modes, and waiting times. After selecting an experience, users can customize the temperature, lighting, and sound to create a private, tranquil space designed to offer true, distraction-free relaxation.

With MŪTUS, we would like to suggest a short moment of silence and brief disconnection from cold reality at the hospital, to release stress and tension.
